Studies have consistently shown that 10-20% of a typical small business’s total expenses are not needed and are wasted profit. I highlight these inefficiencies in the context of the profit margin and the sales revenue needed to recover this lost profit. For Example: At a 10% profit margin, an unneccessary $100 expense requires $1000 in sales revenue to recover the lost profit. Reframing each expense in terms of the sales revenue to actually pay for it, can be a jolting incentive to control costs.
I present actionable budgeting goals for selected expense categories that are discretionary and do not track well with revenue and profit. Increasing profit by reducing expenses is more immediate and easier to achieve than increasing sales.
